Autism. Medication trials

If you've been following us for a year or so, you'll know that Bright Eyes has been on a particular medication for just over 12 months now. The medication is Risperadone and it had an immediate effect on Bright Eyes, calming him down and helping him deal with his anxieties.

At the end of the month we're heading back to the paediatrician for a review, so I thought it would be an interesting experiment to see what would happen if I took him off his dose for a week or so.

So at some stage in the next fortnight, Bright Eyes will be meds-free. I'm not telling exactly when it will happen because I want K, his aide at school to notice a difference or non-difference without knowing when it will be happening.

I'd like to explore taking him off it altogether because it really increases his appetite and he's not built 'lite' to begin with, and I'm quite tired of fighting overeating issues. I really don't want to have an obese child because that just brings more problems and we all know he doesn't need more problems than he's already got.

I don't quite know what I'll expect from taking him off the risperadone - maybe some blow ups, maybe more anxiety, maybe nothing at all. Either way, it will give us something to discuss with the doctor when we get there.
