Autism. Great children's novel
JJ my 11 year old daughter picked up this book, Anything but Typical, at the library the other day. I think she liked the cover and was then surprised to find out it was a novel featuring a 12 year old boy with autism.
"Mum, it's a really great book," she said to me one morning. "It's really sad too." I looked closely at her. Yes, she actually had the beginning of a tear in her eye. And I noticed that she was extremely nice to Bright Eyes all morning after that.
So I thought I would give it a read. From page one I was hooked. Not only was it beautifully written, and the story was well crafted, but it was a great insight into an autistic thought life. The ending was positive, but not cheesy.
If you're wanting some insight into autism for yourself or for your children, this is a great little book for age 10+ readers.
